East Mountain Optomechanical

2/4/99

East Mountain Optomechanical is a start-up company owned by an old hand at optics manufacturing in Albuquerque.  Tom Swann, a former Los Alamos National Laboratory Lab employee, started the company in January.  It's a spin-off of another company he started in 1983, Optomec Design.  Two former Sandia National Labs employees bought Optomec from Swann, and he started the new company with his son Andrew.

East Mountain Optomechanical is a supplier of parts used in the rapid prototyping of other industrial components.

Swann believes Albuquerque has the bas components to take the optics industry to the next level.  "I think there is a real good core of companies here to build on," Swann said.

In his experience manufacturing optics in New Mexico, however, Swann has found it difficult to obtain technology transfers, which allow government-owned labs to partner with industry.  "If the labs didn't make it so difficult to do technology transfers, we could do better." Swann said.  "There is a big payoff with some of this stuff.  But they get to be very political."
